and now

i have a degree in art therapy with a concentration in fine arts, specifically ceramics. this is all
fine i suppose. but more importantly i have this squeal-with-glee, jump-up-and-down, clap-
my-hands kind of passion for and in no particular order…

i absolutely love to spread the entire lot out on my art table and just stare—eye candy at its
best.

what makes me most giddy with delight is carefully selecting the perfect combination of
these materials that, when manipulated with authentic handcrafted artistry, will yield an
entirely custom design, able to remain at the end of the day a singular standout.

then

when i was two i discovered art. like many little girls between the ages of two and
seven, i had a passion for purple. a purple crayon, nubby, broken in two places,
paper torn past the
pu, could not be forced from my small fist. i practiced
scribbles from 9-11 in the morning, broke for mr. rogers, and then i put five more
hours in…until the day came when i undertook my masterpiece.

my palette was purple (of course) and my
canvas measured 3’ x 2’. i took into
consideration everything from line and space to rhythm and balance. i worked
quickly as not to lose my inspiration.

and I must tell you it was brilliant. i smiled immediately and stepped back to
make room for my audience. she gasped loudly. she grabbed me. i remember it
as a kind of shrill question, “julia! you colored the bathroom sink purple!?!”

and so it began…
